Resum informatiu del curs

Aquest curs pretén ser una introducció activa a l’historia de l’art de Barcelona, per a persones nouvingudes o residents de curta o llarga durada. S’imparteix en llengua anglesa, amb recolzament en castellà i català, possibilitant l’accés a persones que no siguin de parla espanyola. Portant els estudiants per Barcelona es pretén que situïn els canvis culturals, polítics i econòmics, exemplaritzats en els artistes més importants, com ara Picasso, Miró, Dalí o Tapies. S’explorarà el seu ric patrimoni arquitectònic: romànic, gòtic, modernista, Gaudí, amb els Jocs Olímpics de 1992 com una mena de renaixement més recent. Barcelona està conceptuada com un focus extraordinari d’activitat artística, tant a Europa com en un àrea internacional més ampla. Els estudiants participaran durant tot el curs mitjançant l’estimulació de la discussió y el foment de la seva creativitat accessible a tots els nivells de la seva experiència prèvia, culminant en una presentació final.

Programa desenvolupat dels continguts

Objectius
Cada alumne haurà d’oferir una presentació d’aproximadament 20 minuts a la darrera setmana. Aquesta podrà ser de diferents maneres, encara que cadascuna d’ells haurà d’incloure una part oral i permetre al final una fase de preguntes.
Desitjo que es consideri el curs com una elaboració d’un mapa històric de l’art de la ciutat. L’intenció de les nostres visites als museus i de les nostres xerrades és la de donar a cada estudiant l’informació necessària i els mètodes d’investigació per a elaborar aquest mapa, en qualsevol de les formes que ells escullin: fent servir la poesia, el drama, diàlegs o dibuixos. Viatjant per la ciutat veurem com els canvis en l’arquitectura són el resultat de diferents esdeveniments històrics o polítics, els quals han deixat literalment la seva petja. D’aquesta manera, la presentació final hauria de reflectir tots aquests efectes en termes d’elecció dels materials i els mètodes usats. Espero que en aquest període d’estudi es consideri com l’art i l’arquitectura han influït a nivell social, en termes humans. Això significa que els descobriments de cada alumne individualment haurien de quedar reflectits pot ser en un diari, en un quadern de viatge, marcant el curs dels estudis o portant realment a enteniments globals, possibilitant l’integració de l’aprenentatge en els dos nivells personal i acadèmic.
El meu objectiu es cobrir àrees d’Informalisme, Modernisme català, Surrealisme i entendre l’acte de mirar en si, en relació amb la creació d’art.
El propòsit del curs es tant l’estudi de Barcelona com el dels seus artistes, així com estimular un apropament interrogatiu a l’aprenentatge.

Continguts
La primera sessió tindrà lloc a a l’Escola Massana, on faré una presentació inicial introductòria per a definir les àrees d’estudi del futur curs. També aquí els estudiants hauran d’estar preparats per a presentar-se ells mateixos, els seus estudis previs o les seves raons per a fer aquest curs.
El curs consisteix en sortir de visita per la ciutat, visitant els principals museus i altres llocs d’especial significat històric i cultural.
Cada sessió implica trobar-se en un lloc prefixat, com en un museu (o pot ser a l’estació de metro més propera), on ens reunirem per tal de que jo pugui fer una presentació del lloc en qüestió. Faré una exposició de l’historia del lloc, parlant del seu contingut i de la seva importància, per si mateix i en relació a la resta de la ciutat. Visitarem els museus més importants: Picasso, Miró, Tapies i molts altres. D’aquesta manera gradualment construirem un dibuix, un mapa de la ciutat, de com ha arribat a ser com és, en base al treball inter-relacionat dels seus polítics, la seva història i cultura. Als estudiants se’ls permetrà aleshores trobar el seu camí per l’element visitat, estant jo mateixa al seu costat en tot moment per a donar-los recolzament explicatiu. Tornarem a trobar-nos mig hora abans de finalitzar la sessió, per tal de discutir i compartir el que hem vist.
Els estudiants seran animats a fer un registre visual de la seva visita, ja sigui en forma de quadern de dibuix, notes o, allà on sigui permès, fotografies. Es tindran en compte aquests registres per a la seva avaluació global. S’espera dels alumnes la seva participació activa, de tal manera que tots puguin aprofitar-se al màxim de l’experiència de la visita.
A cada lloc, proporcionaré qüestions específiques o projectes a considerar, demanant-los i possibilitant-los d’entendre millor la natura del que estan veient.
Al final del curs, ens trobarem la Escola Massana per a les presentacions finals, a les quals haurien d’assistir tots.

Metodologia
No es demana cap coneixement previ de l’historia de Barcelona, els estudiants podran apuntar-se acabats d’arribar a la ciutat o amb qualsevol coneixement que ja puguin tenir. Se’ls animarà a estudiar fora del curs, en consideració especialment a qualsevol àrea d’interès particular o personal que puguin tenir. Aquest interessos podran aportats al grup i compartits per al benefici de la resta dels estudiants. De tal manera, la seva presentació final podria reflectir algun àrea d’interès relacionada amb els seus altres estudis, treballs o amb les seves vides. El curs intentarà connectar els interessos particulars existents de cada alumne amb l’historia de l’art de Barcelona.
El meu plantejament es actiu i obert a les necessitats i interessos de cada estudiant. Durant el curs, presentaré divers material escrit addicional, fomentant la curiositat i estimulant una actitud qüestionant. El meu mètode es basa en considerar la natura del paper canviant de l’art i de l’artista en l’historia i específicament com aquest va créixer i va transformar-se en relació al creixement burgès, industrial i marítim de Barcelona. Els factors culturals, polítics i econòmics són vistos en conjunt.

Avaluació
Els estudiants seran entrevistats abans d’iniciar el curs per tal d’avaluar els seus coneixements previs en art, la seva experiència i el seu domini de tècniques. Ja siguin principiants, intermedis o avançats, el factor crític és el seu entusiasme i la seva curiositat per a introduir-se i aprendre, les dues coses a partir del que anirem veient a mida que es desenvolupi el curs, per a després estimular una actitud interrogativa per a futurs estudis.
Els estudiants hauran de ser puntuals i regulars en la seva assistència.
Es jutjarà de forma crítica el nivell d’interès i la dedicació de cada estudiant en relació amb el curs i el material proporcionat.
La consistència, coherència i participació durant el curs s’hauran de reflectir en la profunditat de l’enteniment mostrat en la presentació final. Aquestes seran les mesures per a avaluar la qualitat del que s’ha produït al final del curs.

Summary of course
This course is intended to be an active introduction into the art history of Barcelona, for either new arrivals, short or long stay residents. It's given in English, with Spanish or Catalan back-up, enabling access for non-Spanish speakers. Taking the students out into Barcelona, the aim is to map the city's cultural, political and economic fortunes as exemplified by major artists such as Picasso, Miro_, Dali_ or Tapies. Its rich architectural heritage is explored : Roman, Gothic, Modernista, Gaudi_, with the 1992 Olympic Games as most recent renaissance. Barcelona is situated as being an extraordinary focus for artistic activity both within Europe and the wider international arena. Students actively participate throughout the course by way of stimulating discussion and an encouragement of creativity gauged for all levels of previous experience, culminating in a final presentation.

Course objectives
Each student is expected to give a presentation of around 20 minutes, in the last week. These can take a variety of forms, although each must include an oral presentation and allow for a short period of questions at the end.
I wish to consider the course as making up an art historical map of this city. The focus of our museum visits and talks is intended to provide each student with the necessary information and methods of enquiry to make this map, in whichever way they may choose: using poetry, drama, dialogues or pictures. As we travel around the city, we'll see how changes in architecture have come about as a result of different historical and political events literally leaving their mark. In this way, the final presentation should reflect all these effects in terms of the choice of materials and methods used. I also hope for this period of study to consider how art and architecture have come about on a social level, in human terms. This means that the discoveries of each individual student should be shown, perhaps as a diary, a sketchbook journey, tracing the course of study or indeed leading to overall understandings, enabling an integration of learning on both personal and academic levels.
I aim to cover areas of ‘Informalismo', Catalan Modernisme, Surrealism and the nature of looking itself, in relation to making art.
The purpose of this course is both to study Barcelona and its artists and also to stimulate an enquiring approach to learning.

Course content:

The first session will be held at the Escola Massana, when I will give an intitial introductory presentation to set out the areas of study for the forthcoming course. Here too, the students should also be prepared to present themselves, their previous studies or reasons for joining the course.
The course consists of going out into the city and visiting the principle museums and other sites of historical and cultural significance.
Each session entails meeting at an appointed place, such as a museum ( or perhaps the nearest metro) , where we gather together for me to give a presentation of the place in question. Here I present the history of the place, indicate its contents and their importance, both in themselves and in relation to the rest of the city. We will cover all the main museums: Picasso, Miro_, Tapies and many more. In this way, we gradually build up a picture, a ‘map' of the city, how it has come to look and be as it is, the interconnected workings of its politics, history and culture. The students are then allowed to find their way around the place, with myself on hand at all times to give explanatory support. We meet up again about half an hour before the end of the session, in order to discuss and share what we have seen.
Students are encouraged to make a visual record of their visit, whether in sketchbooks, notes or when permitted, photographs. These records all count towards their overall assessment. The students are expected to participate actively, so that everyone gains as much as possible from the experience of the visit.
At each site, I will provide specific questions or projects to be considered, requiring and enabling them to better understand the nature of what they see.
At the end of the course, we all gather together at the Escola Massana for the final presentations, to which everyone should attend.

Methodology
No previous knowledge of Barcelona's history is required, students can enroll fresh to the city, or with whatever knowledge they already have. They are encouraged to study outside the course, considering especially any particular personal areas of interest they might have. These interests can be brought into the group and shared for the benefit of the rest of the students. In this way, their final presentation should reflect some special area of interest that relates to their other studies, work or lives. The course is intended to connect each student's existing particular interests with Barcelona's art history.
My approach is active and open to each student's needs and interests. Throughout the course, I introduce various extra written material, encouraging curiosity and stimulating an enquiring attitude. My method is to consider the nature of the changing role of art and the artist throughout history and specifically as these grew and transformed in relation to Barcelona's burgeoning industrial and maritime growth. Cultural, political and economic factors are seen to be as operating hand in hand.

Evaluation
Students will be interviewed before starting the course to assess their background so far in art, their experience and techniques. Whether beginners, intermediate of advanced, the critical factor is their enthusiasm and curiosity to engage and learn, both from what we see as the course unfolds and then to stimulate an enquiring attitude for future studies.
Students must be punctual and regular in attendance.
Each students level of interest and engagement with the course and material provided are considered critical.
The consistency, coherence and participation throughout the course should then be reflected on the depth of understanding shown in the final presentation. These are the measures to assess the quality of what is produced at the end of the course.
